Try a free alpha preview of Into the Drift for Windows or Linux, including Steam Deck. Public demos may be well behind current development.

About these free alpha previews

I may release free alpha demos periodically as development continues, but there’s no fixed release schedule. These downloads may be well behind the game’s current progress, and features or improvements shown in recent videos and devblog posts may not be included.

I’m keeping these builds available so fans can try an early version of Into the Drift for free and get a feel for the game to come. The newest download here is the latest public preview, rather than the latest development build. For a more current look at the game, visit the Devblog and Media pages.

There are two downloads: Windows, and Linux, which is also the one for the Steam Deck. Set-up steps for the Steam Deck and for handhelds such as the ROG Ally are under the Linux download.

Installing on the Steam Deck

The Linux build runs natively on the Steam Deck. You add it to Steam once in Desktop Mode, then play it from Gaming Mode like any other game.

  1. Press the Steam button, choose Power, then Switch to Desktop.
  2. Open a web browser (Firefox is in the Discover store if you don’t have one), come back to this page and download the Linux build.
  3. Open the Dolphin file manager and go to Downloads. Right-click the .tar.gz file and choose Extract → Extract archive here, autodetect subfolder. This makes a folder called Into the Drift. You can move that folder anywhere you like, such as your home folder. Your saves are kept elsewhere, so moving it won’t affect them.
  4. Still in Dolphin, open the Into the Drift folder, right-click Into the Drift.x86_64 and choose Properties. On the Permissions tab, tick Allow executing file as program, then choose OK. Without this, Steam can’t start the game.
  5. Open Steam on the desktop. From the Games menu choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, then Browse. Go into the Into the Drift folder and choose Into the Drift.x86_64. If it isn’t listed, set the file type filter to All Files. Then choose Add Selected Programs.
  6. Optional: in your Steam library, right-click the new entry, choose Properties and rename it to Into the Drift.
  7. Leave Compatibility unticked in the game’s Steam properties. This is a native Linux build and doesn’t need Proton.
  8. Optional, to give the game its own artwork in your library: the download includes a Steam artwork folder. Still in Desktop Mode, in Steam:
    • Icon: right-click the game, choose Properties, click the empty square beside its name and choose icon_256.png.
    • Cover: go to your library’s home page, right-click the game’s tile, choose Manage → Set custom artwork and choose capsule_600x900.png.
    • Background: open the game’s page, right-click the empty banner at the top, choose Set Custom Background and choose hero_3840x1240.png.
    • Logo: right-click the banner again, choose Set Custom Logo and choose logo.png. Adjust Logo Position on the same menu moves it.
    • Wide banner: once you’ve played the game, right-click it in the Recent Games row, choose Manage → Set custom artwork and choose header_920x430.png.
  9. Double-click Return to Gaming Mode on the desktop. The game is in your library under Non-Steam.

Controls. Started from Steam on the Deck, the game uses larger text and Deck-sized menus. The left stick walks, and the right stick or the right trackpad moves the pointer. A clicks, B goes back or closes a window, and Y opens your pack. The D-pad moves between buttons in menus, and between people, containers and items near you in the world. Hold LB for the quick wheel. Options → Controls has the pointer speed, the text size and an option to swap the sticks.

If the buttons don’t respond, open the game’s controller settings from the Steam overlay and choose the Gamepad layout.

Saves are in ~/.local/share/godot/app_userdata/Into the Drift/saves. Attach the save folder when you report a bug.

ROG Ally, Legion Go and other handhelds

Handhelds that run Windows (the ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw and others, as they come out of the box) should use the Windows download above, not this one.

  1. Download the Windows .zip, right-click it and choose Extract All.
  2. Open the extracted Into the Drift folder and run Into the Drift.exe. The game isn’t signed yet, so Windows may warn that the publisher is unknown. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Make sure the handheld’s controls are working as a gamepad. On the ROG Ally that is Armoury Crate → Control Mode → Gamepad. On the Legion Go use Legion Space. The game reads the built-in controls as a standard controller.
  4. Optional: add Into the Drift.exe to Steam as a non-Steam game (Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library) so you can start it from Steam’s handheld or Big Picture view. The download’s Steam artwork folder has a cover, background, logo and icon for it. Step 8 of the Steam Deck guide above explains where each one goes.
  5. On a 7- or 8-inch screen, go to Options → Controls and raise the Text size until it’s comfortable to read.

The controls are the same as on the Steam Deck: the left stick walks, the right stick moves the pointer, A clicks, B goes back, the D-pad moves between buttons and nearby targets, and holding LB opens the quick wheel.

Handhelds running SteamOS, Bazzite, ChimeraOS or another Linux system should use this Linux download and follow the Steam Deck steps above.

Before you play

This is an alpha. It is playable, it is also unfinished, and it will have bugs. Saves may stop working between builds.

  1. Windows: unzip the download anywhere and run Into the Drift.exe. The game is not signed yet, so Windows may warn that the publisher is unknown: choose More info, then Run anyway. Saves are in %APPDATA%\Godot\app_userdata\Into the Drift\saves, and logs are in logs beside them.
  2. Linux and Steam Deck: extract the .tar.gz, allow Into the Drift.x86_64 to run as a program (in your file manager’s Properties → Permissions, or with chmod +x), then run it. Keep it in the same folder as Into the Drift.pck. For the Steam Deck, follow the steps under the Linux download. Saves are in ~/.local/share/godot/app_userdata/Into the Drift/saves.
  3. When something breaks, report it with a screenshot or the save file. That is the most useful thing you can do for the game right now.

What you need

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, or a 64-bit Linux system, including the Steam Deck. A graphics card or integrated GPU from the last ten years or so with Vulkan or OpenGL 3.3 support. About 1.5 GB of disk space once unpacked. A mouse and keyboard, or a controller: Xbox and PlayStation controllers work, as do the built-in controls of the Steam Deck and other handhelds.
