It’s been a long time since I last made an update video for Into the Drift. The previous one was in May 2025, when I was just beginning to get the isometric building framework into place. There were no towns or main questline yet, and much of what now makes up the game was still missing.
I’ve been covering recent work here on the devblog, but it’s overdue for a look at the game in motion. The first catch-up video is now up:
Into the Drift — A Year and a Half of Progress (From Isometric Building Prototype to RPG)
The game today
Into the Drift has grown considerably since that early building demonstration. Its generated landscapes now have towns and harbours to visit, caves and ruins to explore, and people to meet. The opening of the main story gives you a journey to follow with Brynja, while character progression, crafting, equipment and companions give you more to work with along the way.
Building has moved on too, with multi-storey houses, roofs and furnished interiors. Weather, lighting and sound help bring those places together, including the change in how rain sounds when you step inside and close a door.
This video is a short introduction to where things stand. Everything shown is still in development, and there’s more here than I can give a proper demonstration in a single update.
More catch-up videos to come
I’m planning a series of shorter videos so I can spend some time with each part of the game. The current list is:
- Exploring the world. A journey from the world map into the landscape, looking at terrain, rivers and coasts, caves, view rotation, weather and the day/night cycle.
- Towns and the people in them. Villages, harbours, taverns and inns, the Hēahfolc’s mountain towns, and the Galdorscōl, with a look at conversations and local errands.
- The beginning of the story. Arriving with Brynja, finding shelter, and setting out on the first part of the journey. I’ll keep the later turns of the story out of it.
- Growing a character. Skills, thraedweaving, masteries, equipment, crafting and learning from teachers.
- Fighting and surviving. Combat, companions, travelling, supplies and rest, with a closer look at some of the creatures you can encounter.
- Building a home. A return to the subject of the May 2025 video, showing how the construction system has developed and putting a house together in more detail.
I may also make a separate video about playing with a controller and on Steam Deck once I’ve had time to test and demonstrate that properly. A more technical look at how the isometric world works is another possible extra.
There’s no fixed release schedule for these videos. I’ll be working on them in the near future alongside development of the game. The subjects and order may shift a little as I record them, but the world tour is the next one I intend to tackle.
If there’s something you’d particularly like to see demonstrated, let me know in the YouTube comments or on the forum.
You can find this video and the older updates in Media, try the available Windows alpha on the Download page, or browse the Dev-Map for a more detailed picture of what’s built and what’s still ahead.
